When he retired in 2007 to become a full time mediator, William P. Simpson was an equity partner at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Columbia where he was primarily a defense attorney, practicing for six years in the areas of product liability, technology law and litigation, and securities litigation.  From 2000 to 2002, he practiced with the plaintiff's firm of Suggs & Kelly, Lawyers, P.A.  From 1979 to 2000, he had a general practice with a defense emphasis with the predecessor firms of the now Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd.  He also served three and one-half years as an Assistant Attorney General of South Carolina under Attorney General Daniel McLoed, and was a sole practitioner for two years.

  Mr. Simpson has extensive trial experience as lead trial counsel in South Carolina for several national and multi-national companies and was on the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee for the USAir Litigation arising from the Charlotte, NC USAir crash.  He has appeared as litigation counsel in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia, as well as Ontario and Alberta in Canada.

A Certified Mediator and a member of the South Carolina Bar, Mr. Simpson is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Mr. Simpson was a member of the American Bar Association, the Richland County Bar Association, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association. He is a fellow of the International Society of Barristers and Past President and former Master of the John Belton O’Neall Inn of Court.
